Varieties of Decarbonization Conversations

Organized by Working Group on Decarbonisation

Climate change mitigation is an intricate process shaped by a plethora of actors. The channels through which decarbonisation actors operate transgress policy and material interventions, as they also populate abstract spaces via narratives and imaginaries. Overlooking these spaces poses the risk of painting a limited picture of decarbonisation pathways. Indeed, various bodies of literature point towards the link between the storytelling and the production of attainable futures with the takeoff of critical decisions to mitigate the climate crisis. As such, these relationships shape the direction pursued by actors in the decarbonisation process, ultimately affecting socio-institutional structures. Against this backdrop, we propose a panel focusing on the narratives and imaginaries of decarbonisation amongst various actors in different sectors, e.g., electricity generation, industry, transportation, and agriculture.
