2024 Forum on 'Re-imagining Earth System Governance in an Era of Polycrisis'
We are delighted to invite you to attend the 2024 Forum on ‘Re-imagining Earth System Governance in an Era of Polycrisis’. This year’s forum will take place mainly online, with hybrid events being held by various ESG Research Centres around the globe. The forum will offer an accessible and lively space for joint discussions on the newest insights and ideas that underlie earth system governance and inform global sustainability transitions in the wake of multiple ongoing global crises.
About the Forum
The 2024 ESG Forum is hosted by the Earth System Governance Project and co-hosted by Utrecht University, Canada Research Chairs, German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), the Sydney Environment Institute (SEI), the University of Bath, and Future Earth.
The forum stands in a long tradition of global conferences on earth system governance, from Amsterdam (2007 and 2009) to Colorado (2011), Lund (2012), Tokyo (2013), Norwich (2014), Canberra (2015), Nairobi (2016), Lund (2017), Utrecht (2018), Oaxaca (2019), Virtual Forum (2020), Bratislava (2021), Toronto (2022), and Radboud (2023).
Theme: Re-imagining Earth System Governance in an Era of Polycrisis
In addition to the five analytical lenses of the earth system governance research agenda set out in the 2018 Science and Implementation Plan, the 2024 ESG Forum will feature a programmatic focus on ‘Re-imagining Earth System Governance in an Era of Polycrisis’. In an era marked by multiple and compounding global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, food insecurity, the lingering effect of the COVID-19 crisis, economic inequality, political instability, and the geopolitical consequences of ongoing war and conflict, the need to re-imagine Earth System Governance has become ever more paramount. In order to navigate these complex and interlinked global crises – a “polycrisis” – there is a need to re-evaluate traditional paradigms and tenets of global sustainability governance. This re-imagination requires a multidimensional and multidisciplinary approach. It involves integrating insights from various fields such as environmental science, politics, economics, sociology, international relations and public policy to understand the interconnectedness of global challenges and proffer transformative solutions. There is a need to explore the limits of existing governance structures and explore innovative, inclusive and adaptive governance models that can respond effectively to complex and evolving global challenges. Together with innovative, accessible, virtual event panels featuring inter- and transdisciplinary speakers and insights, the 2024 ESG Forum will inform the further operationalization of the Earth System Governance 2018 Science Plan and Community in the coming years and decades of research promoting transformative governance for sustainability.
