Polycritical Engagement: Embedding Reflexivity and Deliberation in Earth System Governance

Organized by Research Centre Australia

Reflexivity and deliberative democracy have been invoked as virtues for contemporary governance that could help address crises ranging from climate change and violent conflict to the erosion of democratic institutions. A key challenge for both concepts is how to embed them in institutions in the face of difficulties in securing broad-based support for different ways of governing and the likelihood that vested interests will resist their adoption. This session will explore a range of strategies for cultivating reflexivity and deliberation in sustainability governance at all scales, drawing on both advances in theory and practical innovations in these areas. The session will be a moderated panel session, with a few rounds of questions from the moderator to each panelist, plus audience discussion. In the session we will develop a collaborative mind map of opportunities and obstacles for reflexive, deliberative governance.
