About this speaker

Simon Niemeyer is Professor and co-founder of the Centre for Deliberative Democracy and Global Governance at University of Canberra. His research in the field of deliberative democracy seeks to understand the nature of public reason, developing methods to observe deliberative reason in practice, and conducting empirical research. His work informs the design of deliberative institutions at small and large scale. Much of his work has focussed on deliberative democracy and environmental issues in addition to a broad range of topics such as technological development, medical ethics, energy futures, immigration, and democratic reform. He completed his PhD at the Australian National University in 2002, which followed undergraduate studies in ecology, economics, and environmental policy (Griffith University). Since graduating, he has acted as chief investigator on 19 research projects, including nine Australian Research Council Awards and an ARC Future Fellowship. He has held research positions at the University of Canberra, The Australian National University, Uppsala University, University of Birmingham, Cambridge University and CSIRO.
